Our residency studios

The PWS Residency Studios are fully equipped workspaces designed for exploration and exchange. Each studio provides the tools, space, and support artists need to develop their projects. From wheel throwing and hand-building to glazing, casting, and firing. All within the creative heart of Jingdezhen.

Your studio space

Each resident works in a 13m² semi-private studio, available 24/7 in a thermostatically controlled building, with air conditioning and heating.

The studios balance privacy for focused work with a communal atmosphere that encourages exchange and collaboration.

We have 11 studio spots in total, for you to enjoy the studio experience with the tight-knit community of other artists and PWS.
Includes a wheel, two chairs, one wooden table, one foldable table, one lamp, and two modular shelving units for storage.

The studio & tools

Get immersed into Jingdezhen’s living ceramic culture. Whether you join us for a few weeks, or a longer immersion, each residency includes a semi-private studio, on-site living, fresh daily meals, and the support of bilingual coordinators to connect deeply into the art and craft.

Studio Equipment

The studio space has shared equipment, including a slab roller, spray booth, and a dry box for Jingdezhen’s humid weather, a ventillation room.

Bilingual studio coordinators

Our bilingual studio coordinators act as translators, guides, and problem-solvers. They help you navigate Jingdezhen’s ceramic networks, connect with local masters, and overcome cultural or technical hurdles.

Plenty of storage

Big project or lots of small parts? Our studios are equipped with a modular shelf system for you to keep easily keep an overview. Each resident gets 2 large shelves for their works.

24/7 hour access

Early bird or night owl? Our residency is open 24/7 for artists. The studio is securely locked and only needs a code to open.

Glaze Tools

We have basic glaze tools available, including heat guns, hair dryer, scales, sieves, spray bottles, banding wheels, sponges, sanding blocks, brushes, scissors, whisks, rulers, french curve rulers, ladels, raised boards and more.

Residents enjoy going to local tool shops to buy a range of tools for cheap, and even buying extra to bring back home.

Clay Tools

Clay tools in our studio include trimming tools, wires, kidneys and ribs, wooden and metal sculpting and smoothing tools, pin tools, knives, sponges, hole punchers, goggles, harp cutters and more.

Kilns

Residents typically use public gas kilns to fire their works, and the studio electric kilns for bisque. There are 4 public gas kilns nearby, each with specific temperatures and specializations. PWS has a total of 7 electric kilns with 2 in the Residency Studio, and the rest in the Education Center.

Public Gas Kilns

There are four public gas kilns at the Sculpture Factory, available for booking by all ceramic makers. All of them are shuttle kilns, each sized around 2–4 m³. The firing temperature ranges from 1280°C to 1300°C, and the firing frequency is about 2–3 times a week. The firing generally lasts at least 24 hours; if firing begins in the morning, the kiln can typically be unloaded by noon the following day. You must bring your ready-to-fire pieces to the kiln room one day before firing starts, so the kiln master has enough time to load the kiln.

Studio Electric kilns

Our electric kilns are reliable, easy to schedule, and designed for efficient daily firing of resident work.

You can reserve the electric kilns at the International Residency or Education Center. There are a total of seven electric kilns of various sizes, including two in the International Residency Studio. The maximum firing temperature is 1260°C.

Price: The cost is calculated by multiplying electricity consumption by 2, plus the kiln fee.

Smaller Kiln: Diameter 42 cm, height 42 cm. Bisque firing approx. 100 yuan; medium-temperature firing approx. 160 yuan.

Bigger Kiln Diameter 65 cm, height 53 cm. Bisque firing approx. 150 yuan; medium-temperature firing approx. 260 yuan.

Carry Person

To transport your works from the studio to the kilns, you can hire a professional carrier.
