The PWS International Residency Studio offers English ceramic residencies and pottery retreats in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of the world.

Residents work independently while being surrounded by a vibrant community of makers, technicians, and fellow artists. Our staff coordinators assit with your residency throughout your time here.
A ceramic residency is a self-led immersive program that offers artists, designers, and makers the dedicated time, space, and specialized infrastructure to develop their work with clay.
In our English speaking residency in Jingdezhen, residents work independently while being surrounded by a vibrant community of makers, technicians, and fellow artists.
PWS residency
While most residencies have a rigorous vetting process and fixed cohorts, our residency is open to all, and flexibly caters to your timeline and needs.
Our aim is to deliver the value of the Jingdezhen ceramics ecosystem to anyone who wants it. We do this through our translators, project assistants, local connections, location in the Porcelain Sculpture Factory, and through our roots within Jingdezhen.
This type of service is difficult to find elsewhere in Jingdezhen.

Residency Application Process
We recommend applying 3 months in advance to allow ample time for questions, planning your stay, arranging visas, and smoothly sorting out any administrative details along the way.

- 3. Let us know by email if you have filled out the application form.
Secure your spot
- To secure your spot, a deposit of 3300rmb is paid
- We strongly recommend paying by WeChat or Alipay, since international transfer is complicated
- If paying by international transfer, it typically takes us a week to receive it. Make sure you put the name exactly as listed.
Visa
- After we receive your deposit, we will send a stamped letter of invitation with details of your stay, which can be used to apply for visa.
- Some nationalities do not need a visa if staying in China for less than 30 days. Please check with your local embassy for details.
Travel
- The easiest way to get to Jingdezhen is taking a flight to bigger cities in China, for example Shanghai, then taking a high speed train to Jingdezhen.
- You can book your train tickets on Trip.com
- Once your train tickets are booked, please send us your itinerary so we can arrange for a driver to pick you up.
Arrival
- Once you arrive at the train station, a driver will pick you up and hold the PWS logo.
- You will be brought to our studio and our staff will give you a tour of the studio, living space, and nearby Sculpture Factory area.

My first residency at The Pottery Workshop was in 2024 after a fellow ceramic artist introduced me to the program. She was so enthusiastic about her experience that she walked me through her work, showed me photos, and shared the link to apply. I was immediately welcomed: Maggie, who leads the residency program, answered all my questions directly before I even arrived.
This is now my third residency here. What keeps bringing me back is the staff. The assistants here are not just helpful, they genuinely think alongside you and your project. During this residency, Huhu, Sailor, and Wendy helped me organize my entire exhibition. When I had a starting idea for lighting my tile work, she engaged with it deeply, offered her perspective, and suggested a better approach I hadn't considered. That kind of creative collaboration is rare and invaluable.
The facilities match that standard: clean, well-maintained studios and comfortable accommodations. The program is expensive, but what you receive in return is a high-quality, fully supported experience. For me, that support is what keeps me coming back.
When I started looking for residency programs in Jingdezhen, two friends separately recommended PWS. They told me the staff can speak English and and will look after you.
I came with an open mind, not knowing exactly what to expect, and I've been genuinely surprised by the depth of the experience. The workshops are taught by people with real expertise, not surface-level instruction.
The staff support you beyond the studio. They picked me up when I arrived, showed me around, and have been with me every step of the way. There was one overglaze I'd heard of but never been able to try, and I had always wanted to try porcelain. The staff helped me track it down and communicate with the shop to get it.
Jingdezhen is a city where every shop and supplier specializes in something specific, and without the staff guiding me and translating, I would never have found any of it on my own.
